Encounters
with the Arts
GAGA’s Encounters
with the Arts programs are unique educational experiences designed
to open the world of art to students of all ages through hands
on exploration, utilizing the vast wealth of artistic knowledge
and professional expertise available at GAGA from our resident
artists.
Whether touring art exhibitions
with the artists, or the Creekside Nature Walk & Sculpture
Trail with master gardeners, or just imagining the 150 years of
American history in and around the 18th century architecture,
students are invited to soak in the aesthetic experience.
Artists’ workshops run by
painters& sculptors, woodworkers & metalsmiths, film makers&
photographers can be another part of their arts encounter.
Or better still-- students can
be given the time and space to discover something about themselves
and do their own creating in an environment of artistic exploration.

Nyack High School AP Studio Art classes
held a full-day working field trip to the GAGA Arts Center in
order to work on their portfolios for the College Board.
From 9am-3pm, students spent time in the
galleries creating paintings, drawings, collage and taking photos.
A few students were even brave enough to work near the creek on
a windy day in order to add works of art to their portfolios.
At lunchtime, artist Pat Hickman was generous enough to spend
time lecturing about her work and process, which added to the
experience for all involved. All students left the day with one
or more AP-quality works for their Breadth or Concentration portfolios.
Many thanks to the GAGA staff for their
help setting up and planning this day!

CUBEHEAD Interactive
Video Installation
Ed Moriarty - MIT
MIT professor Ed Moriarty and sculptor James Tyler
join forces to create Cubehead at GAGA, with participating students
from secondary schools in the Hudson Valley region, for display
at the GAGA Arts Festival, May 2nd and 3rd, 2009.
Part one: The students will be left in the gallery with the materials
needed to build a ten foot square cube of white fabric. They will
be left to solve the engineering problems on their own. No instructions,
no restrictions, other than the desired end result: A four sided
projection screen onto which Cubehead will come to life. Student
filmmakers will document the process.
Part two: A console seat with four laptop computer cameras, left,
right, front, back, connected to four projectors relaying their
images, actions, and voices to the screens. For the two days of
the GAGA Arts Festival, Cubehead will come to life with the huge
moving visages of any and all visitors brave enough to participate.
Goal: Science, engineering, and art through problem solving,
group work, community building, humor, education, and technology.
Cubehead is just the beginning. The techniques and skills involved
include infinite possibilities: Cube Aquarium, Cube Dance, Cube
Theater...Ideas will be welcome!
Cubehead at GAGA--education cubed!
